Pretty sure you handled that all on your own last time, buddy. I didn't need to "try" anything.

[ The cuddling was...nice, though. He wouldn't mind if tonight ended the same way. ]

Wait. So, I'm not responsible enough to drink yet because of my age, but I'm expected to be responsible enough to stop YOU from drinking? Hmmm... Something doesn't add up.

Good. Bring the alcohol. We can test those expectations.

[ When Itachi arrives at the house that evening, the smell of cooked tofu and simmered broth permeating the air may be familiar to him. Agedashi dōfu has been painstakingly prepared per Guanshan’s instruction, in the interest of experimenting with Asian cuisine while not straying too far from his boyfriend’s bland food preferences. Specifically for Itachi’s notorious sweet tooth, Stiles slaved over a strawberry cheesecake across the better part of the day, with several failed prototypes hidden shamefully away in the garbage.

After they’ve eaten dinner and before Stiles serves the cake – which he insists on doing while singing “Happy Birthday” obnoxiously, no matter how unimpressed a look Itachi gives him – the teenager presents his gifts: a sharpening kit; a custom-made, Japanese-style tea set; and a letter that the shinobi is told under no uncertain terms is to be opened when he’s alone. A rare flush of embarrassment darkens Stiles’ cheeks as he offers the last item, looking for all the world like he’s about to rip the letter back out of Itachi’s hands and tear it to pieces.

Later – much later, if Stiles and his hormones have anything to say about it – Itachi can open the letter to find it written partially in English, partially in Japanese. There’s a clear discrepancy between the two languages; each English letter is written in his usual jerky, hurried hand, while each Japanese stroke is sharp and precise, the work of someone who has practiced obsessively to perfect the kanji and hiragana. ]

Happy birthday, Itachi. Apparently, it’s customary to wish Japanese people a good year after “happy birthday,” but with so much of the future out of our hands in this situation, I think I’ll wish something else instead. I hope that we keep traveling these dimensions together. I know it’s not ideal for either of us to continue on this way. Still, I wouldn’t change anything. You’re important to me.

I haven’t finished translating your letter to me. Japanese is really difficult to learn. I might’ve tried to have a few people translate it for me before realizing it was meant to be a personal challenge. Whoops. I don’t mind communicating like this though, so send me more letters in the future. It’ll help me learn. Also your handwriting is nice. I like looking at it.

[ Something is crossed out heavily, impossible to discern. A smiley face is drawn next to the blot. ]

Put the sharpening kit and tea set to good use.
