INTELLIGENT | His wit and mental ability are hallmarks of his identity. Itachi is highly intelligent; he's said to be at Hokage level even as a child. It is what drives much of his life, particularly the reason why Danzou and Fugaku targeted him in a tug-of-war between the Uchiha clan and Konoha, and it serves him in every situation going forward. It helps him excel in strategy during combat, allowing him to come out on top simply by reading/observing a situation, both due to his prodigious ability and his wealth of knowledge about shinobi arts.

ADAPTIVE | Itachi has an uncanny ability to think on his feet and make quick decisions to adapt to unprecedented situations. He views the world as objectively as possible in order to alter his behavior and actions to better confront a problem. His mental acumen is continuously commented upon in the series, because not only is he smart, he's able to plan and make decisions incredibly fast even as situations on the battlefield change.

ALOOF | Itachi is often seen as a detached, withdrawn individual who separates himself from other people. This is a trait he's had since he was a child, influenced by his own genius which serves to divide him from the rest of the world. He is a man of few words and allows himself little emotional expression. He had very few friends growing up, and once exiled, continues to keep to himself to the end. It is hard to tell what he is thinking or feeling in most conversations; he's had to craft a persona of indifference in order to handle the difficult world around him.

MANIPULATIVE | Compounding on his isolation, brilliance, and logical mindset, Itachi has highly manipulative tendencies. He views most people as tools in a game of strategy - this includes both himself and those he loves deeply, like Sasuke. He will use others in order to achieve a means to an end, no matter the cost. Even if that end is idealistic or serves a greater purpose, it might sacrifice many along the way. His own life of deceit lends to his belief that altering someone else's perception (even against their will or without their knowledge) is one of the most powerful weapons. This is at the heart of many of his own abilities, too, especially within genjutsu.

AVOIDANT | This can be construed both positively and negatively. On one hand, Itachi prefers non-conflict and peace; he avoids violent situations and often chooses outcomes that don't result in death. On the other hand, he avoids well-meaning people and his own problems like he's allergic.

HISTORY

At the age of 4, his father brought him to a battlefield where he first witnessed the devastation of war. At 5, his younger brother Sasuke was born. At 6, Itachi enrolled in the Academy to become a shinobi.

Four months passed before his Academy teachers agreed to allow Itachi to graduate early. This was unusual, as most were 12 when they graduated, but the conditions of the Great War still remained and an exception was allowed. He became a genin the next year.

At 8 years old, Itachi’s teammate was killed in front of him on a mission to protect the Fire Daimyo. This awakened his Sharingan.

Although most deemed him able to become a chūnin immediately, Itachi’s team leader would not approve it. Konoha officials overrode this decision and allowed Itachi to compete in the chūnin exams alone. He set a record for the second exam; his first opponent in the final exam forfeited, and after defeating the second opponent, he was not required to fight the third. Itachi became a chūnin at 10 years old.

He entered the ANBU at age 11, the youngest in history. It was here he began working as a double agent between Konoha and the Uchiha clan, or Danzou and Fugaku specifically, both of which desired his abilities for their own ends.

He and his closest friend, Shisui, attempted to foil the Uchiha clan’s plans for a coup. This failed and after having his eye stolen by Danzou, Shisui committed suicide*, entrusting his remaining eye to Itachi. Witnessing this caused him to awaken his Mangekyou Sharingan.

As many in the clan suspected Itachi of contributing to Shisui’s death, they began to mistrust him, and he became more distanced from them in turn. At age 13 (12 in actuality), Itachi was promoted to ANBU captain.

Pushed into a corner by Danzou, aided by “Madara” Uchiha, Itachi chose to wipe out the Uchiha clan in hopes of preventing future war. However, he bargained to keep Sasuke alive or else reveal the truth, then left Konoha as a missing-nin. He soon joined the Akatsuki organization, prepared to live the remainder of his life a criminal in exile.

Partnered with Kisame, he kept an eye on the Akatsuki from within while planning his own demise at Sasuke's hand. Goading his little brother to hate him, he turned Sasuke into a weapon of his own self-punishment, meanwhile suffering physical illness and deterioration. Eventually, his last wish was granted.

*I interpret this event based on the more detailed light novels, Daylight / Midnight, wherein Itachi does physically push Shisui off the cliff at Shisui's insistence.
