β Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy? Canon height of 5'10"/178cm and weight of 130lbs/58kg. His build is very lean and slender, though this is often disguised under clothing. He has a body made for combat and survival, verging slightly into unhealthy territory due to low appetite, stress, chronic illness, and constant fatigue. Essentially he does not have an ounce of fat on his body; itβs all pure wiry muscle.
β How old is he? 21 at my usual canon point. While in Aefenglom, he turned 22 on June 9th.
β Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch? Stiff and rigid. He carries himself like someone who is never relaxed and always wary of their surroundings, but it's not sloppy, either. His posture itself is excellent, and it would be rare or very unusual for him to slouch, except maybe when heβs lounging around and pretending to be a villain.
β How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities? Over the years of his life, Itachi's health has suffered significantly due to what appears to be a chronic respiratory illness. This lends to his eventual death. Outside this illness, he's in peak physical fitness as a man who spends his life fighting. However, use of his evolved kekkei genkai (bloodline limit, in this case the Mangekyou sharingan) has also led to deteriorating vision.
β How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid? Most of his movements are extremely deliberate and graceful. Tense and fluid both, if possible, given his training and natural habit.
β How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror? To answer the first question objectively: Itachi has been portrayed as attractive in a sleek and dangerous way. Some of his allure comes from his abilities and reputation, but physically at least, he is through-and-through an Uchiha. And just like his brother, girls in the village ogled him for his looks. His own perception of himself is almost nonexistent. One might argue that he does take care of his appearance, but this is minimal, and most of his features are simply the lucky lottery of genetics. He doesn't spend much time if any in front of a mirror.
β Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred? His skin is fair, though a shade darker than his brother's. Despite his lifestyle, his body is mostly unscarred because of a hands-off approach to combat. He may have a couple of white, faded lines from childhood.
Since Aefenglom, he has a scar on his thigh from when Sasuke stabbed him prior to his death, and also a scarred bitemark on his forearm from a tussle with a dragon.
β Describe his hair: color, texture, style. Itachi's hair is long and black. He keeps it, almost always, tied into a low ponytail. (Seriously, he's had this hairstyle since he was ~12.) The texture is silky and straight.
β What color are his eyes? Primarily black, though the shade is a bit grayer than his brother's. When able to use the sharingan, they change to a striking blood-red.
β Does the character have any other noteworthy features? He has what seem to be "stress lines" at the corners of his eyes. I have no idea what they are, tbh, but I guess he really needs a nap and some spa treatment. He also has a tattoo on his left bicep from his time in the ANBU.
β What are his chief tension centers? Head, neck, and shoulders. He is prone to tension headaches, and due to a very physical lifestyle, also suffers stiffness in his neck/shoulders. It is hard for him to relax, so these points of stress often feed into each other.
β What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit? Utilitarian, neutral, and practical. He doesnβt dress for any sort of aesthetic reason, but instead whatever makes combat convenient and easier. In canon, he abides the Akatsuki dress code. He also wears a mesh shirt (common for shinobi) and baggy pseudo-sweatpants. Given the ability to choose his own wardrobe, it would be occupied mostly by black or grey colors. Maybe a dash of red if heβs feeling ~wild~... his taste is nonexistent, all heβs ever worn are uniforms or gear, please send help.
I know it's a popular fandom headcanon that he would be a well-dressed fashionista, but I think that would apply more in modern-era AUs than in the canon universe where everyone wears crocs and arm warmers and fishnet while running around in the woods trying not to die. Just my opinion.
β Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them? The ninja sweatpants look cozy? But again, he mostly wears uniforms. That Akatsuki cloak does his body no favors. A tasty glimpse of collarbone would be rare. Iβm inclined to say he doesnβt really pay attention to fashion or dressing himself, so he probably buys clothes slightly too large for his body as long as he can fight fine in them.
β Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences? The difference is he takes the cloak off and sits around in the mesh shirt and sweatpants... so no. He has zero work/life balance.
β You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando? Briefs offer the most support comparatively, and when youβre doing ninja acrobatics, your junk needs support.
β What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse? Surprisingly low and deep despite his somewhat effeminate appearance.
β How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate? Although his voice is very even and articulate, it isnβt necessarily soft. Each word is a deliberate choice, and because of that, it sometimes comes off like heβs hesitating or trying to think of what to say. He speaks with purpose, always with consideration and care put into how heβs communicating.
β Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics? No distinct accent or dialect in the context of his world. When speaking to most people, Itachi uses clear and direct language in the effort of wanting to be understood. No noticeable verbal tics, unless a lot of cold silences are weird.
β What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency? Fluent in fantasy world Japanese.
β Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations? No, although he does occasionally add suffixes ('san'/'kun') for enemies (i.e. Konoha shinobi). His language can also be a bit ruder when talking to Sasuke (pre-reveal) in particular.
β Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words? It depends on the situation, but I would err on the side of the latter. Knowing how his mind works, Itachi would prefer to collect his thoughts before making any kind of speech. He's also not great at small talk, so catching him off-guard on a subject or topic may not turn out well. Maybe he's so good at lying because he just doesn't talk! Who knows!
β Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change? Highly eloquent, rarely inarticulate. He alternates between simple, precise verbiage and flowery, abstract words because he's pretentious like that. Possibly if he was in an altered state (drugged/drunk, though GOOD LUCK WITH THAT) this could change.
β How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart? Extremely intelligent all across the board. He was deemed Hokage-level brilliance as a child. Literally, this is why he gets away with infomodding everyone.
β Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate? Depends, but given opportunity, Itachi would prefer having the time to consider and weigh a situation before he's forced to act. He can think on his feet as needed (and often does in combat), but he'd be more sure of any decision after evaluating all possible facts.
β Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical? Logical, idealistic, and practical. Basically: it just depends on the situation. Itachi is highly logical on the battlefield, but he's also extremely idealistic and practical as a person. His core beliefs are rather abstract, especially when you consider his childhood dream of eradicating all violence in the world, but he has been grounded in shinobi culture which does not coincide with his dreamer-like mindset. So, he suffers. Contradictions are a weird obsession of his.
β What kind of education has the character had? He graduated the Academy, became a genin, then a chΕ«nin, and finally joined the ANBU by the age of 11. His education is well-rounded if more or less self-taught. He studied on his own starting when he was four, then began training later with Shisui. This includes academic subjects as well as the physical shinobi arts. He is basically a huge nerd.
β What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about? Combat is his area of expertise, but more specifically: genjutsu, fire release, and shurikenjutsu. He is ravenous for knowledge in general, because it helps him feel like he has control over his surroundings/other people, so there's no specific focus. He would research anything if he felt it could be useful, or just because.
β Is he an introvert or an extravert? 150% introverted old man.
β Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven? Melancholy, driven, and even-tempered. Occasionally he may get hung up on a low mood if he becomes pensive toward his relationship with Sasuke or past events (the massacre in particular), but it would be hard for most people to tell from looking at him. He keeps much of that under a tight seal. Kisame is a notable exception for spending so much time with him and paying attention to the subtleties of his personality. Otherwise, heβs like a brick wall and interacting with him can feel tedious.
β Is he more likely to act, or to react? React. It helps him gather information about a situation first. He isnβt keen on diving right into the fray.
β Which is his default: fight or flight? Probably flight, given that heβs a pacifist by nature (at odds with his more violent tendencies, ahem Tsukuyomi.....). Heβd prefer to flee a scene than engage in a fight unless he deemed combat absolutely necessary.
β Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks? Again, brick wall. Heβll ignore most attempts at shallow or immature humor. That said, he does occasionally enjoy a good chuckle about how shitty the world is, so gallows humor or bleak irony might crack the slightest smile. Much more likely if youβre Kisame. His sense of humor is dry, dry, dry and often sarcastic, so itβs easy to miss completely.
β Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them? Itachi is Troubled with a capital T, and his issues are fairly complex, so I don't want to slap any labels on his mental state and call it a day. But I will say that PTSD and depression are likely up there. As for how he deals with it: haha, he doesn't. Unless you count him spending the majority of his life trying to get his little brother to kill him a coping mechanism.
β What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person? His whole childhood was a roller coaster of trauma, but a quick list: visiting a war battlefield with his father; Tenma, his genin teammate, being killed in front of him by Obito; Sasukeβs birth and their relationship in general; meeting and eventually colluding with Danzou; joining the ANBU via an assassination assignment; Shisuiβs death; his downward spiral of a relationship with his father; and, of course, the massacre. Everything after that is just Itachi biding time to finally die.
β What does he fear? Not very much anymore. His greatest fears are probably seeing the shinobi world become consumed in another war (lol irony), and Sasuke dying.
β What are his hopes or aspirations? His childhood dream was to become the strongest shinobi so he could wipe all violence and conflict out of the world. He was four, okay, I know it makes zero sense. This dream was eventually crushed by his role in what happened between Konoha and the Uchiha clan. His only real aspiration after that is protecting Konoha and Sasuke however possible.
β What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him? Everything... he is incredibly secretive and maintains a lie up until his death, so heβs essentially estranged from everyone. I think he prefers people know the absolute minimum about him on a personal level.
β Describe this character's relationship with his parents. Not great at the time they were alive, nonexistent now that he murdered them! Thereβs little to say on his mother, Mikoto, as canon unfortunately doesnβt provide much on their interactions. I assume it was a fond if emotionally distant dynamic, growing more strained as he got older and continued to go against his fatherβs wishes (because Mikoto was fully in support of the Uchiha side and therefore Fugakuβs opinions). We do see moments in the light novels where Mikoto expresses concern for Itachiβs mental well-being, but itβs silenced by Fugaku, who is clearly the parent that calls the shots. Itachi likely avoided his mother later on the same as everyone else.
As for Fugaku, itβs extremely complicated. His father molded his entire world, starting with the genesis of his trauma where he was shown the effects of war. Initially, Itachi sought guidance and direction from Fugaku as a shinobi, asking his father to help train and teach him. This eventually ended when Itachi realized his father was no longer on the same level as himβthat Itachi was the stronger of the two. Worse still, Fugaku became very controlling of Itachi due to his sonβs remarkable talent. Paternal love twisted into jealousy and envy at times. He wanted Itachi to be the tool he used to bring power and notoriety to the Uchiha clan within Konoha. A rift grew between them as Itachi suffered the stress of being pulled in two directions, trapped both by Fugakuβs expectations of him as well as Danzouβs. Over time, Itachiβs opinion toward his father soured, and they often argued. He came to see Fugaku as arrogant, close-minded, and power hungry. Yet when the massacre occurred, Fugaku accepted his fate and did not fight back, telling his son instead to look after Sasuke. He also told Itachi that he was glad his son believed in something enough to go to any lengths to achieve it, even though he didnβt agree. Itachi cried as he killed his parents.
Despite everything, Itachi did love them both a lot. And he still holds great respect for Fugaku, however biased this is next to the fact that his father was ultimately responsible for all that happened (apart from Danzou, of course).
