β How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart? Extremely intelligent all across the board. He was deemed Hokage-level brilliance as a child. Literally, this is why he gets away with infomodding everyone.
β Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate? Depends, but given opportunity, Itachi would prefer having the time to consider and weigh a situation before he's forced to act. He can think on his feet as needed (and often does in combat), but he'd be more sure of any decision after evaluating all possible facts.
β Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical? Logical, idealistic, and practical. Basically: it just depends on the situation. Itachi is highly logical on the battlefield, but he's also extremely idealistic and practical as a person. His core beliefs are rather abstract, especially when you consider his childhood dream of eradicating all violence in the world, but he has been grounded in shinobi culture which does not coincide with his dreamer-like mindset. So, he suffers. Contradictions are a weird obsession of his.
β What kind of education has the character had? He graduated the Academy, became a genin, then a chΕ«nin, and finally joined the ANBU by the age of 11. His education is well-rounded if more or less self-taught. He studied on his own starting when he was four, then began training later with Shisui. This includes academic subjects as well as the physical shinobi arts. He is basically a huge nerd.
β What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about? Combat is his area of expertise, but more specifically: genjutsu, fire release, and shurikenjutsu. He is ravenous for knowledge in general, because it helps him feel like he has control over his surroundings/other people, so there's no specific focus. He would research anything if he felt it could be useful, or just because.
β Is he an introvert or an extravert? 150% introverted old man.
β Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven? Melancholy, driven, and even-tempered. Occasionally he may get hung up on a low mood if he becomes pensive toward his relationship with Sasuke or past events (the massacre in particular), but it would be hard for most people to tell from looking at him. He keeps much of that under a tight seal. Kisame is a notable exception for spending so much time with him and paying attention to the subtleties of his personality. Otherwise, heβs like a brick wall and interacting with him can feel tedious.
β Is he more likely to act, or to react? React. It helps him gather information about a situation first. He isnβt keen on diving right into the fray.
β Which is his default: fight or flight? Probably flight, given that heβs a pacifist by nature (at odds with his more violent tendencies, ahem Tsukuyomi.....). Heβd prefer to flee a scene than engage in a fight unless he deemed combat absolutely necessary.
β Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks? Again, brick wall. Heβll ignore most attempts at shallow or immature humor. That said, he does occasionally enjoy a good chuckle about how shitty the world is, so gallows humor or bleak irony might crack the slightest smile. Much more likely if youβre Kisame. His sense of humor is dry, dry, dry and often sarcastic, so itβs easy to miss completely.
β Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them? Itachi is Troubled with a capital T, and his issues are fairly complex, so I don't want to slap any labels on his mental state and call it a day. But I will say that PTSD and depression are likely up there. As for how he deals with it: haha, he doesn't. Unless you count him spending the majority of his life trying to get his little brother to kill him a coping mechanism.
β What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person? His whole childhood was a roller coaster of trauma, but a quick list: visiting a war battlefield with his father; Tenma, his genin teammate, being killed in front of him by Obito; Sasukeβs birth and their relationship in general; meeting and eventually colluding with Danzou; joining the ANBU via an assassination assignment; Shisuiβs death; his downward spiral of a relationship with his father; and, of course, the massacre. Everything after that is just Itachi biding time to finally die.
β What does he fear? Not very much anymore. His greatest fears are probably seeing the shinobi world become consumed in another war (lol irony), and Sasuke dying.
β What are his hopes or aspirations? His childhood dream was to become the strongest shinobi so he could wipe all violence and conflict out of the world. He was four, okay, I know it makes zero sense. This dream was eventually crushed by his role in what happened between Konoha and the Uchiha clan. His only real aspiration after that is protecting Konoha and Sasuke however possible.
β What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him? Everything... he is incredibly secretive and maintains a lie up until his death, so heβs essentially estranged from everyone. I think he prefers people know the absolute minimum about him on a personal level.
